Short answer

WooCommerce uses three image sizes: woocommerce_single (600 px wide by default, uncropped), woocommerce_thumbnail (300 px, square-cropped by default), and woocommerce_gallery_thumbnail (100 × 100 px, square). Upload square images around 2000 × 2000 px, set thumbnail cropping to 1:1 in the Customizer, and regenerate thumbnails after any change.

The three WooCommerce image sizes

When you upload a product image, WordPress and WooCommerce generate several resized copies. WooCommerce defines three of them. Your theme decides where each appears, and themes can set their own values.

  • woocommerce_singleThe main image on the product page. Defaults to 600 px wide and is always uncropped by default.
  • woocommerce_thumbnailProduct grids such as the shop and category pages. Defaults to 300 px wide and square-cropped.
  • woocommerce_gallery_thumbnailThe small images below the main product image. Always square, 100 × 100 px by default.

What size to upload

Upload one high-resolution original and let WooCommerce make the smaller copies. A square image around 2000 × 2000 px is a reliable default: it is sharp on large and high-density screens, supports zoom on themes that enable it, and crops cleanly into square thumbnails. If you also list products in Google Merchant Center, note that Google has announced a 500 × 500 px minimum for all product images, with enforcement beginning January 31, 2027. Google also asks that product images not be upscaled thumbnails and not include promotional text, watermarks, or borders.

Where to change sizes and cropping

WooCommerce's image options live in the WordPress Customizer, in the WooCommerce product images section. There you can set the main image width and thumbnail width if your theme allows it, and choose thumbnail cropping.

  • 1:1 square cropping: the most consistent grid. Recommended for most stores.
  • CustomEnter an aspect ratio such as 4:5 for portrait products like clothing.
  • UncroppedKeeps each image's original ratio, which can make grids uneven if your photos differ.

Why your theme may override these settings

Since WooCommerce 3.3, themes can declare their own image widths. When a theme does, the width fields disappear from the Customizer and you can only change cropping. If your images look the wrong size and you can't find the setting, check your theme's documentation before adding plugins.

Regenerate thumbnails after changes

Changing image settings doesn't resize images you've already uploaded until the thumbnails are regenerated. WooCommerce regenerates them in the background after you publish Customizer changes, which can take time on large catalogs. Until it finishes, some products may show old sizes or stretched images. If thumbnails still look wrong afterwards, a thumbnail regeneration plugin can rebuild them manually.

Fixing blurry or inconsistent product images

Most WooCommerce image problems come from the source files rather than the settings.

  • Blurry main imagesThe upload is smaller than the theme's display width. Upload a larger original.
  • Uneven gridPhotos have different aspect ratios. Use 1:1 cropping or prepare all photos at the same ratio.
  • Product cut off in thumbnailsThe product isn't centered or fills the frame edge to edge. Leave margin around it.
  • Slow pagesOriginals are huge files. Compress them to a few hundred KB each before uploading.
  • Inconsistent look across the catalogPhotos were shot in different light and backgrounds. Re-shoot or regenerate them on one consistent backdrop.

Consistent images for a whole WooCommerce catalog

A consistent catalog usually means the same background, lighting, and framing on every product. Lystiva's Re-shoot Studio keeps each product photo's angle locked while rebuilding lighting, backdrop, and surface, and bulk production applies one setup across up to 20 products at a time. With a connected WooCommerce store, Lystiva can import products as Sources for your review, create new products as drafts, and update selected fields on existing ones after you review the changes; publishing stays a separate, explicit action.

Questions sellers ask

What is the best image size for WooCommerce products?

Upload square images around 2000 × 2000 px and let WooCommerce generate the smaller sizes. Use 1:1 thumbnail cropping for a consistent grid.

What are WooCommerce's default image sizes?

woocommerce_single is 600 px wide and uncropped, woocommerce_thumbnail is 300 px wide and square-cropped, and woocommerce_gallery_thumbnail is 100 × 100 px.

Why can't I change image sizes in the WooCommerce Customizer?

Your theme probably declares its own image sizes. When it does, WooCommerce hides the width settings and only cropping can be changed.

Do I need to regenerate thumbnails?

Yes, after changing image settings. WooCommerce regenerates them in the background; large catalogs can take a while.
